Greetings from the Counseling Office of Norman County East Schools! What a big year we are having in our building. There are many changes and new things going on in our district. This is an exciting and positive situation for our district. Even when positive things are happy and good stuff is going on there can be stress and disruption of our schedules and that of our children. It’s up to us to do what we can to let them know they are valued, secure and able to make the change!

Last spring I was able to attend the Minnesota Children and Adolescent Mental Health Conference in Duluth, MN. (April in Duluth...cool, wet and rainy...yet still lovely on the Lake!) One of the workshops I attended was talking about symptoms of mental health crisis in children and adolescents. The presenter made the comment that so many of the symptoms we are seeing today can be controlled by good old scheduling. Regular bedtime and sleep amounts for recommended age groups, health food and snacks, and especially a predictable, calm evening routine involving a caring adult. Boring is better, at times, for positive functioning in the growing brain.

Research can be interpreted in many ways, this is widely known. However an article in the US News and World Report by Heather Monroe states the following, 

Research has found a clear link between sleep deprivation and teenage depression and anxiety. In a study of nearly 28,000 high school students, scientists found that each hour of lost sleep was associated with a 38 percent increase in the risk of feeling sad or hopeless, and a 58 percent increase in suicide attempts. Another study found that high school seniors were three times more likely to have strong depression symptoms if they had excessive daytime sleepiness.

Because of the continued development of the brain until age 24 it is vital to take care of these stages in life so our students and children have positive futures. Healthy, happy, hopeful students turn into adults that have confidence, vision and solutions for the world! We are doing big things here as we care for our students and children.
